The end result: The first Modbus Slave Communication Module for the PLC-5 platform was born. 1990-91: And then there was ProSoft Technology! That single chip led to a partnership with the technology giant Allen-Bradley and in 1990 ProSoft Technology was formally incorporated. 1993: Opening Doors By 1993 ProSoft Technology had evolved from a company with a good product to an all around solution provider, with a growing protocol library. 1997: New Office for Europe-Middle East-Africa Region In 1997 a ProSoft Technology office was opened in France, with Alain Chevalin joining the team as the Sales Manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. 1999: Extending the Global Reach In 1999 Lenus Hong was hired as the Sales Manager for the Asia-Pacific region and ProSoft opened an office in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. At the same time, Franco Melchiorre was added as the Sales Manager for the Latin American Region. 2002: Wireless is More… The first of what would become a broad array of wireless technologies is launched to the marketplace. 2004-Present: New Offices... New offices are opened in Brasil, India, China, Dubai, Germany, and Mexico.

    The Passing of an Icon: The Continuation of a Dream
    Twenty years ago, Douglas Sharratt had a dream. At the time it was a small dream…he wanted his Rockwell Automation processor to talk to a Modbus device. So, he went to his garage and came out with a chip that made it possible. Twenty years later, the multi-million dollar company of ProSoft Technology which Doug founded, is still selling that Modbus Communications Module, along with over 400 other communication solutions. "Doug was the architect of the original communications protocol allowing disparate PLC's to communicate," commented Kevin Mueller of Prousys. "For those of you who have programmed you can understand that this single concept is what eventually propelled our industry into the 21st century. It was HUGE!" On July 16, 2008, at the age of 50, Douglas Sharratt, lost his life in a plane crash in Sunriver, Oregon. He was the pilot and only person on board the plane. Even though the company has grown from a one-man operation to over 100 employees and 18 offices around the world, the spirit of the company has always reflected Doug's passion for "making work fun" as he used to say. He was a pioneer in the field of automation and over the years he gathered around him people of like mind and spirit. He instilled a passion in everyone he came into contact with. That passion lives on at ProSoft Technology. Gary Joke is now the new CEO and President of ProSoft Technology. Gary has been the CFO for ProSoft Technology since the inception of the company. "It has been my great privilege to not only be Doug's business partner but also his long-time friend," said Gary. "We are fortunate that Doug planned so well for the future. Doug shared his long range goals for ProSoft with myself and the Managing Directors of ProSoft in great detail and we have the management team already in place to achieve those goals." "We have no doubt that Gary's extensive business acumen, along with the support of the senior leadership team and the dedicated support of every ProSoft employee, will be a driving force in all of ProSoft's future endeavors," said Andreas Somogyi, Global Marketing Director for ProSoft Technology. So, Doug's bigger dream lives on through the company he founded 20 years ago, ProSoft Technology.

    ProSoft Technology's EtherNet/IP-to-Modbus 4-port gateway provides 4 Modbus application ports for multiple network requirements, providing maximum flexibility. Each port is individually configurable with the option to support serial master or slave configurations using RS232/422/485 settings. The module can operate as an EtherNet/IP client so Modbus data can be written directly to the ControlLogix or CompactLogix processor without the need for additional program message instructions.     The SLC 5/05 with the MVI46-DFNT provides a EtherNet/IP bridge to help optimize data through put while communicating with a HMI or SCADA host with effecting process control bandwidth on the SLC 5/05 port.     Water in Iraq
    In Badaah, Iraq, David Watts has put finishing touches to the largest water treatment facility in Southern Iraq, the Nasiriyah Plant, which supplies 10,000 cubic meters per hour of fresh drinking water to approximately three million Iraqis. Watts placed individual ControlLogix processors at the three pump stations along the Garaaf River, a small branch of the Tigris River. The fourth ControlLogix was placed in the control room to function as a SCADA host for the plant. A Quantum PLC, which has 20 Remote I/O drops, was used to control the backwash of 20 individual filters cells. "I had never used a ProSoft Technology interface module before," said Watts, "And, of course there were no manuals or cables on location to help me with this, so I called ProSoft." ProSoft Technical Support Engineer, Scott Lee, answered the call and got him up and running. "This new water facility rivals any state-of-the-art water treatment plant we have in the States," said Watts.

    What is CIPconnectTM enabled
    CIPconnect provides connectivity for a PC to the ProSoft Technology PROFIBUS module over Ethernet using Rockwell Automation's 1756-ENBT EtherNet/ IP module. This allows the user to configure the PROFIBUS Master module and network, upload, download files and view network and module diagnostics from a PC. RSLinx is not required for configuration. All that is needed is an IP address and slot number.

    In-chassis flow computers cut costs
    In the Brazilian rainforest's Urucu province, four ProSoft Technology flow computers reside in a PLC-5 chassis, calculating flow volumes for 38 natural gas streams on their way to a Petrobras oil treatment plant. The gas is then transferred 12 km to an oil extraction plant where 16 flow computers for the SLC platform calculate flow rates and gas volumes over the processor backplane. "Complete automation of the test system without volume loss was only possible because of the ProSoft flow computers," said Francisco Carlos Campana Aragon, Senior Equipment Engineer for Petrobras. "If we had chosen the classic model of EMEDs dedicated flow computers, 68 units would have been needed, with implementation costing an average of $40,000 each. The integration between the ProSoft flow computers along with the flexibility of the SLC and PLC processors were decisive factors in our success."

    Use ProLinx Gateways to Track Network Health
    Did you know that status information from a ProSoft Technology gateway can be used in logic or SCADA systems to monitor the health of a network For instance, with an EtherNet/IP-to-Modbus communication gateway, status information can be obtained from a Modbus network with values representing messages to a device, messages transmitted, and the last error code received. This can be mapped to any location in the module's memory and shared with EtherNet/IP network devices. This allows the EtherNet/ IP network to monitor communications on the Modbus network for fail-safe considerations, and since this is all configurable, users may decide what information to share between networks.

Primarily this instrument is used on oil rigs and is mounted within retrieval vessels that hold the crude oil as it is pumped from the sea bed. The profiler gives an image of the contents, which can be oil, sand, water, emulsion, gas or foam, of the vessel according to their density. "Our clients have repeatedly asked for Modbus, Modbus Plus and Profibus connections, hence the ProLinx modules are an ideal interface," said Swalwell.

    At Gestamp Automoción—a tier one automotive supplier—facility in McCalla, Alabama, two transfer presses are used to produce metal components for Mercedes-Benz, with production in the area of 1800 parts per hour. At least once a quarter, their hardwired network suffered cable degradation. Each occurrence causing the operation to shut down for up to two hours at a cost of $14,500 each instance plus the value of the parts not produced. With the aid of their Rockwell Automation distributor, Roden Electric, Gestamp decided to use ProSoft Technology for a wireless solution. Now, each press is automated by a dedicated ControlLogix Programmable Automation Controller (PAC), fitted with a 1756-ENBT Ethernet card and a ProSoft Technology Ethernet radio. Each of the four bolsters received an EtherNet/IP Adapter and an Ethernet radio. "The radios work better than expected.     In an effort to increase production and reduce costs, the Venezuelan national oil company PDVSA used a new interface module which will allow them to communicate between Allen-Bradley's ControlLogix platform using DF1 and the HART protocol. Approximately 40 ProLinx HART Multi-drop (8 channel) Serial Port Gateways from ProSoft were installed in their crude oil production units in eastern Venezuela. The ProLinx HART modules allow up to 8 channels of multi-drop HART communications (support for up to 120 instruments such as Mass Flow Meters, Differential Pressure Transmitters, Absolute Pressure Transmitters and Temperature Transmitters). It also provides full access to the digital configuration, diagnostics and maintenance information in each connected transmitter.

    Maximize Bandwidth and Minimize Data Loss
    EtherNet/IP uses explicit and implicit messaging. This presents a challenge for many wireless devices since implicit messaging involves the multicasting of data. Multicasting can translate into message re-broadcasting, which consumes bandwidth and increases the risk of collisions or dropped packets. 802.11abg Industrial Hotspot radios, however, use Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) querying to enable wireless multicast filtering. This optimizes bandwidth because radios can unicast messages from producers to one or more consumers, and if an acknowledgement is not received, the radio transparently repeats the transmission avoiding loss of data.

    Select Radios and Accessories Like a Pro!
    ProSoft Wireless Designer (PWD) simplifies the task of planning and specifying your ProSoft Wireless network. The user-friendly, wizard-based interface creates a visual layout of your radios and sites, and it generates a complete Bill of Materials including radios, cables, lightning protection, connectors, and antennas. When creating the site layout, PWD is able to validate wireless link feasibility based on path length and recommended accessories, and is able to predict signal strength based on distance, local regulations and hardware choices. Design a Wireless Network The PWD expert system asks overall network design questions to help select radio and automatically selected accessories including: Indoororoutdoorapplication Typeofconnectivityrequired(serialorEthernet) Throughputrequirement Installationcountry(forpower&frequency settings) Once the general network information is entered, each wireless site is added. If the GPS coordinates of the sites are know, they can be entered to calculate the length of the wireless path between sites. Then the sites are linked together as desired and PWD calculates the estimated signal quality based on a clear wireless path (free-space). Generate List of Wireless Components Once all of the sites and paths are entered and accessory selection is final, ProSoft Wireless Designer provides a complete list of radios and accessories as well as a list for each site. The parts list can be exported as an Excel spreadsheet for quote or the PWD project file can be sent to ProSoft Technology for review. If the predicted signal quality is not as high as desired, the wireless accessories for each site can be modified (for example selecting higher gain antennas) or perhaps a repeater is added to make the wireless path feasible. The database of accessories includes connector types, RF gain or loss of accessory, and other information. Warnings are made if accessories are selected that will not connect or do not match the frequency of the radio.
