ACKNOLWEDGEMENTS Very long time ago in Jyvskyl, Finland, Professor Donal Carbaugh taught a course titled Cultures in Conversation. That was my starting point for intellectual path that is about deep curiosity over the relationship between culture and our everyday communication. I want to thank Donal, my advisor, for patience, opportunities, space, and guidance at different times. Also, I want to thank my dissertation committee, Dr. Vernon Cronen and Dr. Edwin Gentzler for their friendly support, interest and thoughtful feedback. Several individuals have been of practical help in the dissertation project: My interviewees gave their valuable insights, time and interest; Kalle Toiskallio from the Mobix research project made the "airport interviews" available; Hanna Muilu helped with transcribing the interviews; and Jim Helling and Margaret Boyko worked extremely fast and carefully editing the language.
