The Shaw College Boxing Club was established last March.
According to Lam Yuen Tung, current Chairman and Chan Kwun
Yip, Chairman Designate of the Club, a similar student society was
set up more than ten years ago. However, it was not known why it
disappeared later. "We want to change the common views about
boxing. It is in fact a non-violent sport and is not restricted to boys, "
they said.
Lam and Chan consider it an exciting sport. It emphasizes
basic movements. Posture and steps have to be accurate. It is also
important to be physically fit. Boxing is indeed very safe as long
as the boxers put on all the protection gear and safety measures
followed. It is quite unusual that one will get hurt in the sport.
Due to the shortage of manpower and resources, only boxing
courses were organized last year. In the future, the Club will do
more on promoting the sport and try to recruit more members.
In fact, the Club is open to students of all four colleges. Besides
boxing courses, the Club will also arrange members to watch
boxing matches. In the long run, it is hoped that a university boxing
team can be formed.
